Preparing a winter stay in Alentejo

  • Jan 24
  • 3 min read

Preparing a winter stay in Alentejo at Casa do Campinho is about bringing together three things that go very well together:

  • time to relax,

  • little adventures outside,

  • a calmer work rhythm for those who bring their laptop along.

This article is designed to help those who want to spend a few days away from their routine in January/February. It helps you organize before packing, know what to expect, and how to make the most of the house and the region in a slow manner.

Before You Come:

Winter in Alentejo is milder than in the rest of Europe, with clear sky days ideal for walks, but cold nights that call for layers of clothing and good coats.

Practical Suggestions:

  • T-shirts, fine wool sweaters, a good warm coat, scarf, and hat for the late afternoons, especially to enjoy at our fire pit.

  • Boots for walking on dirt trails and through historic villages like Monsaraz or Évora.

“Slow” Materials:

  • A book, notebook, pen, headphones for calm music, and if you like, you can bring a camera for the soft winter light.

For Those Who Work:

  • Laptop, chargers, headphones with a microphone, and if you want, an extra mouse/keyboard to turn the suite's table into a mini-office.

What to Do in Winter Near Casa do Campinho:

Winter in Alentejo is perfect for walking without excessive heat, tasting wine by our fireplace, and exploring towns and cities with much fewer people.

From Casa do Campinho, it's easy to combine very calm days with short trips to Monsaraz, Reguengos de Monsaraz, Évora, Vidigueira, and the Alqueva lake area.

Winter Program Ideas:

  • Walking trails in the village of Campinho among olive trees, schist walls, and open views of the countryside, ideal for photography and "clearing your mind."

  • Birdwatching at Monte das Cebolas, just a 20-minute walk away.

  • Enjoying Monsaraz in a quiet mode with its almost empty walls, views over Alqueva, craft shops, and cafes without queues.

  • Wine and olive oil tastings at various estates in the region that offer visits and tastings during winter, often in rooms with a lit fireplace.

  • Stargazing on cold, clear nights. The Alqueva area is recognized as a Dark Sky destination, with some of the darkest skies in Europe.

In Our Casa do Campinho, Winter Calls for Small Rituals:

  • A leisurely breakfast with local products, without rushing to leave.

  • Afternoons of reading or games in the living room or on the sheltered terrace, with tea or Alentejo wine.

Many guests divide their day between online meetings and breaks outside, taking advantage of the fact that in winter, Alentejo has less movement and more tranquility.

Suggested “Slow Telework” Routine:

Morning:

  • A peaceful breakfast and planning the day with a view of the countryside.

  • A work block of 2–3 hours in the suite or a quiet common area with good natural light.

Afternoon:

  • A break for a 30–45 minute walk around Campinho or to a viewpoint overlooking the lake.

  • A new work block, ideally until mid-afternoon, to close tasks before sunset.

End of Day:

  • Offline moment: watch the sky darken, prepare tea, dine at a nearby restaurant, or order dinner in advance at our house.

How to Make the Most of Your Winter Break:

More than just “filling” the days, the secret is to create a balance between silence, nature, and small local experiences.

In 3 to 5 nights, it is possible to feel the difference: arrive tired, slow down on the first day, fit in one or two walks, and gradually let the rhythm of the village and countryside settle in.

If this is the break you are looking for, January and February are ideal months to find Alentejo calmer, more authentic, and open for conversations at the table.

At Casa do Campinho, the invitation is simple: bring your coat, your laptop if you need it… and let us take care of the rest, between breakfast, dinner, the countryside, and the starry sky.
